Critical Edge Film Festival (CEFF) was founded in Tallahassee by FSU students Justin Verley and Collin MacPherson. Since its conception in 2014, it has grown to be a student-favorite, with frequent screenings and audience interaction. The Tallahassee branch of the festival was soon renamed “Experimental Edge Film Festival,” and we’ve since expanded to collaborating with a number of different festival events around the country. CEFF has most recently expanded to Milwaukee, WI and New Orleans, LA, and seeks to bridge the gap between renowned creatives and students who are full of potential. Our business as a festival network is designed to guide student artists, actors, and filmmakers through the process of creating their own film festivals in hot-spots in the student art community. A typical CEFF branch consists of a pre-screening season involving a number of pre-screening events; during these events, a student host will screen a number of short films and facilitate audience critiquing between shorts. Our smaller, shorter, film pre-screening events usually take place inside of art spaces, independent theaters, or local coffee shops, and are generally cheap or free and open to the public. During these events, the audience participates in the critiquing of various short films and ultimately their critique will assist in the process of deciding whether or not a festival selection will be screened during our annual event or wins a category. Although many of our festival branches are in their first season, we aim for the annual events to take place at multiple venues over a span of a few days, and consists of all of our films deemed our winners through our pre-screening season/submission period.
Avant Edge Film Festival is hosting a festival pre-screening event at Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery and Think Space showcasing the feature film “Gringo” by Jose Luis Solis alongside 5 short films, with 2 local student Chicago filmmakers.
