Biografie
Textiles is one of the first historical forms of art, but has today, often a lot of negative connotations. Some might think only of quilts and curtains which, yes it is, but it is also so much more than that. We at Kalopsia want to change this and show the diversity of the medium, in all its forms.

Biografie
Textiles is one of the first historical forms of art, but has today, often a lot of negative connotations. Some might think only of quilts and curtains which, yes it is, but it is also so much more than that. We at Kalopsia want to change this and show the diversity of the medium, in all its forms.
In the UK at the moment, there is a vast amount of innovative Textiles art being produced and Kalopsia’s role is to bring that work to the public. Kalopsia is a platform for anyone working with Contemporary Textiles to have the opportunity to change the publics perception of Textiles. Our goal is to open up the debate of what Textiles can be. Kalopsia now support the growth of artists of all levels, experience and backgrounds and strives to develop cultural understanding and social engagements within the subject.
Textiles
Kalopsia works extensively to raise the value of textiles as a contemporary art practice. The organisation also challenges the conceptions of what textiles can be and opens up the debate on how the medium can be used as a contemporary art practice now and in the future.
Kalopsia thus poses the question about what textiles is and uses a unique and different approach to the subject than the traditional one. Incorporated in Kalopsia’s work with textiles are for example system design, video installations, traditional weaving, performance art and photography. By approaching textiles in a variety of ways, Kalopsia seeks to explore the boundaries of the medium, both conceptually and as a craft. Kalopsia also believes that textiles holds great value when working with community art due to the communal history of the medium itself. Exploring textiles within community art projects can alter people’s perception of what textiles is and also raise the self-esteem and -awareness in the participants.
Artists’ Books
In the same way as Kalopsia investigates what textiles can be, the organisation also explores the various forms of expressions in artists’ books. This is mainly done through the travelling exhibition Octavo Fika (see below) which aims to open up the debate on what an artist’s book can be. Kalopsia encourages the visitors to interact with the pieces of art on display. It seeks to create a relaxed and positive atmosphere where people feel invited to stay longer and read the books, discuss and get inspired by the works shown.
Beschreibung
Kalopsia was founded in 2012 by four Textile graduates all with an unique and different approach to Textiles. They work with everything from system design, video installations, traditional weaving, and pattern cutting to performance art. They are currently based in Edinburgh but have exhibited in Scandinavia, England and Scotland.
It was after their first textile exhibitions in the UK and Scandinavia that they realised the lack of space for contemporary textiles within the art community and the general lack of understanding of what textiles can be. It was from this realisation that their goal became to provide opportunities for contemporary textiles to be seen and understood.
Kalopsia now brings attention to this upcoming field and sees textiles as a distinct artistic practice which opens up the debate on “What is Textiles”.
