The Papay Gyro Nights Art Festival 06.02.-13.02.2012/ Papay-Papay in Meiri, Scotland
PAPAY GYRO NIGHTS ART FESTIVAL is an international contemporary art festival (mainly experimental film and video art in connection with visual art, performance, music and architecture) holding place in unique settings of extreme remoteness of the island Papa Westray (aka Papay, or Papey in Meiri), and in the time of extreme winter weather conditions. The idea of the festival has originated from the ancient Papay tradition of The Night of The Gyros (or Gygr, Gryla, Grylur, Grøleks, Skeklers as its know in other Nordic countries), which till the beginning of 20s century was celebrated on the island in the first full moon of February. Against as reconstructing what is gone and almost forgotten, the Festival is a reflection on the folktale, the island’s landscape and heritage, as well as interpretation of tradition and ritual, through new developments in art, music and architecture. The Festival is a Research lab and the place for a discussion about interaction between new media and ideas in relation to tradition and ritual. During the Festival the Island will be transformed into the art space and artworks will be screened and exhibited in old farm buildings, boat house, workshps, ruins and open landscape

Genetic Moo: Spirals, Skin and Slides Workshop
Come along and create 3D spirals, bits of skin, and hand-made projector slides.
We will be using straws to create spiralling double helixes; ancient paperfolding techniques to create spirals and hexaflexagons, latex to cast skin like surfaces, and what ever materials we can lay our hands on to create projection slides.
At the end of the session you can either take your creations with you or contribute them to our Nautiloid installation.
THE NAUTILOID
The Nautiloid was an invented species in the science fiction novel Star Maker which was written by Olaf Stapledon in 1937. In it he describes a history of the entire universe billions of years into the future and the fantastical genetically engineered aliens and civilizations that live there. The Nautiloids lived on a planet covered entirely by oceans and evolved their snail like bodies into rowing boats and sailing ships.
We will be building a Nautiloid inspired screen over the course of the festival – day by day. It will be a low-tech sculpture, made out of rope, string, latex, lycra, and found materials, consisting of many small parts. Hand-made slides will be projected on to its surfaces. The projected slides will be created using basic art materials and simple objects found on the island – for example bits of lichen or seaweed.
